Jason Waterhouse and Michael McCormick 2007/2008
2007 was a huge year for us. After being selected for the Australian Youth Sailing team we trained hard to get to the ISAF World Youth Championships, Canada, July 2007 where we brought home a bronze medal and helped our Australian Team to win the prestigious Nations Trophy - CLICK HERE to see some of our photos
In October 07 we went to Laucala Bay, Suva, Fiji where we won our first World Championship in the Hobie 16 Youth Division - what a buzz! CLICK HERE to check out the presentation video.
In December 07 the Australian National Hobie Cat Championships were held in Botany Bay, Sydney. We were not able to contest this title last year because we had to be in Tasmania for the ISAF selection, so this year we nailed it and came home with the ANHCA Hobie 16 Youth Championship title.
On January 1st 2008 Jason was on his way down to Melbourne to again win the ISAF Australian Youth Multihull title. "I am sailing with my cousin, Lisa Darmanin in the ISAFs this year because Michael is too old! (Under 18 age restrictions for this Championship). We are off to represent Australia in Denmark later in 2008 trying to bring home another multihull medal!!
With the ISAF Australian Youth Sailing Team Jason and Lisa spent most weekends training together for the ISAF Youths later in the year in Denmark as well as attending a Serena regatta in France during April in preparation. Jason and Lisa performed well at the ISAFs in Denmark (July 08) but were handicapped by being the lightest crew in very heavy conditions and despite some good placings were not in the top 3 this time - "there's always next year" says Jason, who will just scrape in under the maximum age for his last year in this division.
Michael and Jason had one international regatta together - to Noumea in New Caledonia where they again were the youth winners. The Noumean sailing community were gracious and generous hosts and some lasting friendships were formed. A re-match is planned for Sydney next February.
